Helping Kiwis find a better KiwiSaver plan

New Zealanders can now compare and switch their funds for free, thanks to our easy-to-use evaluation tool.

Our Opportunity

2017 reports from the Commerce Commission revealed that 1 in 5 KiwiSaver members were sitting in low-earning default funds — missing out on thousands of dollars of potential returns.

To help Kiwis out, we decided to build an easy-access tool that could compare funds on their ethical impact and returns.

Our Challenge

Ghost Street needed to create a brand and website that Kiwis could trust. Our success would hinge on our ability to convey complex financial ideas responsibly, via clear design. By cutting out the jargon, we hoped to give everyday people the confidence to make well-informed financial decisions for themselves.

On a technical front, this meant building an independent platform to manage, process, and display quarterly performance data for all 165 funds. Sticking to tough legal guidelines would be another key challenge.

Our Solution

Ghost Street teamed up with New Zealand’s most experienced Ethical Investment Specialist to set up BetterSaver’s ethical framework.

Together, we developed the tools that Kiwis would use to gauge risk, returns, and ethical ratings across different funds. We also built a custom backend for the professionals who would manage BetterSaver’s ever-changing fund data, and an innovative display for users.

Finally, to prep the BetterSaver MVP website for its October 2018 launch, we developed a friendly brand mascot and illustration system that could be taken directly to market.

The Results

Over 100 visitors switched funds during BetterSaver’s launch week alone. Meanwhile, applause from national news media prompted 7 fund providers to update their policies to provide more transparency and ethical oversight.

BetterSaver’s trusted, independent platform continues to help New Zealanders stack up savings, educate themselves, and support funds with social missions.

With our solution as a springboard, BetterSaver was able to raise over $3M in initial seed funding to pursue their vision for the future.
